Hands-On Project

Our "Hands-On" project is designed to solicit our community for ideas and projects that need attention to improve Colorado Springs. Once submittions are collected, a committee of Altrusa members is formed to select three finalists. Those three finalists are then held to a vote from club members. Our winner by most votes then receives the helping hand they asked for.

Books at Bedtime

The "Books at Bedtime" program is designed for children who are hospitalized. Anytime a child must go into the hospital for any length of time it is stressful for not only the parents but the child as well. It is important to help the child be as comfortable as possible. We have developed a program to do just that. We will be reading to the children at night time to take away the stress of being away from home. We are focusing on one specific story line, "Little Eaglet" by Darlene Hatcher, a local author. We will also have the Eaglet herself coming in for a personal visit to the children. Our goal is to raise enough funds so that each child would receive a copy of "Little Eaglet" that is read to them.

Ronald McDonald House

Altrusa provides dinners to the Ronald McDonald House four times a year. The Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families of hospitalized children to rest and regroup near their loved one.

Adopt a Family

Each year Altrusa adopts a family in need. Together we provide birthday gifts for each child. Our club provides both Thanksgiving & Christmas meals, as well as holiday gifts for the entire family.

Children's Book Drive with CSU

Children's Book Drive was huge success this year!! For two weeks this past September, the employees at the Colorado Springs Utility Company collected children's books for our Children's Book Drive. The employees were located throughout Colorado Springs at ten different locations. This is our second year doing this project with the Utility Company and the employee's really stepped up the donations this year! We collected 1464 books in all. Almost 500 more than last year! The coordinator at the Utility Company was very helpful and had all of the books delivered to one of their locations. We then stopped in and picked them all up at once. For our Program Meeting, we sorted all of the books into categories like Pre-School, 6th Grade, Adult, etc. On Make a Difference Day, we cleaned all the books. Pre-school books were the ones that needed to be cleaned and scrubbed the most! On Make a Difference Day we also delivered some of the books. We took a couple of car loads to Christmas Unlimited. Connie, Bailey, Sam, and I got a tour of their facility as well. We are also invited back to help them when the toys and books are given to families this holiday season. It is a great organization. We also gave books to Chidren's Arc, Children's Literacy Center, and the adult level books were given to a local homeless shelter. We found a new home for them all!
